Brookhaven Highway Department Completes Comprehensive Stormwater and Flood Mitigation Project in Center Moriches

Center Moriches, NY – Brookhaven Highway Superintendent Daniel P. Losquadro has announced the Town’s completion of a $316,000 comprehensive stormwater and flood mitigation project in Center Moriches. While supporting the natural infiltration of stormwater runoff and improving water quality in Old Neck Creek and the Forge River, this project will enable stormwater infiltration at the end of Old Neck Road.

In 2018, the Town of Brookhaven was the successful recipient of a NYSDEC Climate Smart Communities Grant, which was used to develop a document that assessed the local conditions of the most vulnerable road ends in greatest need of mitigation measures to improve resiliency and protect water quality on the south shore of Brookhaven. Infrastructure was assessed for vulnerability to sea level rise, chronic flooding conditions and opportunities to improve impacts from stormwater runoff. Old Neck Road was one of 15 road segments identified in the Town of Brookhaven’s Climate Smart South Shore Communities Plan as vulnerable and in need of mitigation.

Prior to the completion of this drainage grant project, Old Neck Road was susceptible to flooding during extreme storm surges, as it acted as a conduit for stormwater runoff to enter Old Neck Creek via sheet flow. The road end abuts a sandy shoreline at the mouth of Old Neck Creek; a marina is located north of the road and residential properties to the south. The design for this road end project included removal of a section of roadbed that was replaced with a bioretention area with native vegetation. In addition, a drainage swale was installed along the side of the road in the shoulder area. This infiltration system will support the natural infiltration of stormwater runoff and improve water quality in the river.

This project came in under budget at $316,000, of which 50 percent will be reimbursable from Suffolk County through the Suffolk County Water Quality Protection and Restoration Program grant.

“In recent years, South Shore communities have been greatly impacted by large-scale storm events, resulting in significant damage to public assets,” said Superintendent Losquadro. “My office will continue to actively pursue funding opportunities to facilitate important drainage projects such as this one.”
