Yaphank, NY – The Brookhaven Highway Department was recently awarded $1 million in funding to replace the culvert at Mill Road over the Carmans River in Yaphank. The funding is part of the New York State Department of Transportation’s BRIDGE NY Program designed to accelerate the renewal and modernization of local bridges and culverts.

“This funding will enable us to construct a new, structurally-modern culvert to replace the existing structure which is currently showing signs of severe deterioration,“ said Daniel P. Losquadro, Superintendent of Highways.  “Mill Road is a heavily traveled artery in the Town of Brookhaven, providing passage for trucks traveling between the LIE and Middle Country Road. The existing structure was not designed to support the current truck traffic. Its complete removal and replacement will enhance its resiliency and safety for motorists and pedestrians.”

This project will involve the complete removal and replacement of the existing culvert system, removal and installation of associated drainage, roadway repairs/paving, and installation of new curbs and pedestrian access. The existing two-part timber-concrete composite culvert has been struck by vehicles several times.  The new eco-friendly culvert will be increased by four feet from its current width to create a rock path that will allow wildlife to safely cross under the roadway. In addition, new curb, sidewalk and guiderails will be installed on the east-bound side of the road heavily used by pedestrians seeking access to the local businesses.

The project is in its final design phase; work is anticipated to begin on the new culvert in July 2020.

Supervisor Ed Romaine said, “Upgrading our infrastructure is ongoing throughout the Town and I thank Superintendent Losquadro and his Highway Department crews for their efforts. This culvert project is a much-needed improvement that will benefit the ecology of the Carmans River and all the waterways that it connects.”

Councilman Michael Loguercio said, “This is a very long overdue project that I am excited to see for the people of this community, and for those who traverse this roadway on a daily basis. I applaud our Highway Department for obtaining the funding to complete this job, as the safety of all roads for our residents is paramount.”
