Shoreham, NY – The Brookhaven Highway Department was recently awarded a $1.8-million grant to reconstruct the sidewalks on North Country Road in Shoreham from Woodville Road to Valentine Road. In addition to the reconstruction of the existing sidewalk to meet current ADA standards, the Highway Department will also construct new sidewalk from Valentine Road to the entrance of the Town of Brookhaven’s Shoreham Beach providing safe and consistent pedestrian access through the Shoreham corridor.

This worthwhile project was selected through a competitive process made available through the Federal Highway Administration and administered locally by the New York State DOT’s Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP). The Town of Brookhaven’s successful application presented a plan that will increase options for non-vehicular transportation and reduce vehicle emissions, as well as traffic volume on local roads. The Town of Brookhaven was one of only three Long Island municipalities to be awarded funding in 2019.

“This funding will enable us to improve pedestrian access and overall safety along a very busy stretch of North Country Road that sees many bikers, joggers and walkers,“ said Daniel P. Losquadro, superintendent of highways.  “While there is existing sidewalk on the north side of North Country Road, it is not continuous, and no portion currently meets the minimum ADA standards. Upon completion, this project will connect the Shoreham Plaza on Route 25A, the Miller Avenue Elementary School, and the neighborhoods both north and south of North Country Road to the entrance of Shoreham Beach.”

“The Shoreham Wading River School District is pleased to learn that the Town of Brookhaven has been awarded this important grant,” said Gerard Poole, superintendent of schools.  “This project will dramatically improve the road safety and access for our students and families as they travel to school and walk to bus stops. We look forward to its implementation as it is an added level of protection for our school community.”

Councilwoman Jane Bonner said, “I am extremely pleased that we have been awarded this grant to pay for what amounts to an unfunded mandate when the federal government changed the ADA requirements several years ago. I commend Superintendent Losquadro for his efforts to make the roads safer in my Council District and throughout the Town of Brookhaven.”

The scope of this project, which is anticipated to begin in 2020, will include the construction of new ADA-compliant sidewalks, curbs and ramps; the construction of retaining walls where grade changes to private property necessitate; drainage upgrades and new installations where applicable; and the complete resurfacing of North Country Road from Woodville Road to the entrance of the Town of Brookhaven’s Shoreham Beach.
