Superintendent Losquadro Announces 6th Annual Brookhaven Highway Safety Day

Holtsville, NY – Brookhaven Highway Superintendent Daniel P. Losquadro and Councilman Neil Foley are announcing the Sixth Annual Brookhaven Highway Safety Day, to be held Saturday, Sept. 21, at Safety Town, 249 Buckley Road, Holtsville, NY 11742.

The event, which is hosted by the Highway Department’s division of traffic safety and held in conjunction with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s National Seat Check Saturday, will feature:

•  A free car seat inspection from 7:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., during which Suffolk County Sheriffs and certified technicians from the Brookhaven Highway Department will inspect car seats and provide parents with essential information about choosing the correct car seat;

•  A free bicycle safety rodeo, including a safety inspection and non-competitive skills course for kids of all ages, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.; and

Highway safety demonstrations and interactive displays performed by various participating organizations including law enforcement and emergency services from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“I am proud to offer this annual event to Brookhaven residents,” said Superintendent Losquadro. “It’s a great opportunity for families to come out and have children’s helmets and bicycles inspected for safety and make sure their car seats are installed and functioning properly. In addition, attendees can participate in fun, interactive highway demonstrations. Most importantly, this event serves to prevent bad habits before they begin, while helping to ensure the safety of motorists on our roadways.”

Councilman Foley said, “As a parent and town councilman, I am very happy to see how many families participate in Highway Safety Day each year. Participants not only receive hands-on bicycle safety instruction inside Safety Town’s replica miniature village, they also have their helmets and bicycles checked by the Highway Department Division of Traffic Safety employees. Additionally, parents leave with the confidence knowing their children will receive the maximum protection from their child safety seat.”

Organizations participating in the highway safety demonstrations include: the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, the Suffolk County Police Department, Suffolk County FRES, Holtsville Fire Department, Long Island Rail Road, and Long Island ABATE. In addition, Moe’s will be on site with complimentary chips and salsa for attendees during the highway safety demonstrations; WBLI will also participate as an event sponsor.

The rain date for this event is Sunday, Sept. 22. Participants are required to bring their own helmets and bicycles for participation in the bicycle rodeo; both will be inspected for safety. Car seat inspections are by appointment only; to schedule an appointment or for more information, contact Safety Town at 631-363-3770.
