Stony Brook, NY – Brookhaven Highway Superintendent Daniel P. Losquadro has announced the Town’s completion of construction of the Aunt Amy Creek Stormwater Project. This project involved major infrastructure restoration to repair outfall pipes that were installed approximately 40 years ago and had become dislodged, causing severe erosion and compromising the structural integrity of the discharge system. The Woodfield Road outfall system received roadway runoff from as far as 2.5 miles away.

The redesigned outfall system incorporates advanced water quality treatment and surge mitigation which treats stormwater and reduces the velocity of runoff before discharging into Aunt Amy’s Creek. The design included the creation of a meandering rock channel with dams, installation of a water quality unit and 21,000 square feet of new native plantings. The creative design of the new outfall system will prevent erosion of the creek slope and improve conditions in Aunt Amy’s Creek, which is a tributary to West Meadow Creek.

The cost of this stormwater project was $793,000 which was paid for through capital funding.

“This was a major infrastructure rehabilitation project in Stony Brook,” said Superintendent Losquadro. “It is yet another example of our commitment to repair aged, failing stormwater drainage systems across the Town of Brookhaven.”
